Wept the River

Lizzy was asleep alone in Badger’s car when Ryan’s jeep rolled down the long slope of the Gaffney yard and into the river. It wasn’t the sound that roused her, but the flashlight beams circling in the yard, sparring and separating like boxers.

The short man smiled in a cruel way and said the women were like sharks. They had to keep moving or they would die. The tall man laughed and said it was true. They told her to make sure her affairs were in order, and snatched a couple of the mangoes. Then they disappeared down a side street.
